The D3000 has a very impressive feature for a starter DSLR, an intuitive guide mode that asks you about your subject and automatically adjusts settings for the best possible shot. Think of it as an on-board tutor there to help every step of the way.

Ready when you are. Hit the power button and literally a second later it is ready to go. While the d3000 is not video capable it does capture an impressive 3 frames/ second, guaranteed to grab all of the action. All captured images are stored on an SD media card or a higher capacity SDHD card that has a slot on the right side body behind a spring loaded door. The cards are relatively inexpensive and easy to pop in and out.

D-lighting is a feature available on the entire Nikon DSLR line. A great feature for smoothing out those tricky exposure situations such as, dark foreground/ light background that otherwise produces silhouettes. Further image shadows are conquered by the attached pop up flash or add an optional flashgun. Like that shadow effect? Okay, flash mode OFF.

The Nikon D3000 has a large 3 inch fixed 230k dot resolution LCD monitor that provides visually pleasing, user friendly information display. The large screen gives a good view of images while using the in-camera retouching ability. Additional and more advanced editing is done when hooked up to your computer via USB port and using the supplied software.

Add your own lens to the d3000 body or get it in a 'kit' with the versatile 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR image stabilization Nikkor Zoom Lens, Rechargeable Li-ion Battery, Quick Charger, Eyepiece Cap, Rubber Eyecup, USB Cable, Camera Strap, Body Cap, Accessory Shoe Cover and Software Suite CD-ROM.

Most Nikon lens' are compatible; however, only AF-S and AF-I lens' support all d3000 functions such as, autofocus and 3D color matrix metering.

The plastic resin body at first feels 'cheap' but after spending some time it the small, light weight design is appreciated. The right hand grip is comfortable and easily places the shutter release finger in the proper place.

Easily manipulated with a dexterous thumb is the simple, old school design mode wheel that clicks comfortably into place for each of the 13 settings. 6 scene types: portrait, landscape, child, close-up, night portrait and sports. Full auto, autoflash off and guide modes plus, scene, shutter, aperture, manual, auto and auto flex program exposure modes.
