Digital Cameras - What Fun

Taking pictures can be a ton of fun. In today's world of digital cameras you can get a really nice camera for less than 0. A huge part of the fun is the end result. When taking pictures don't just go for the normal shot. Take a photo of the same thing but change the angle of the camera and see how it looks. That is one of the great things about digital cameras, you see the shot right away.

Make sure to not just focus on the main subject but look around and behind the subject. Get rid of the ugly stuff in the frame and keep the good stuff. Sometimes this is done by moving the camera just a little bit up, down, right or left. Sometimes taking a step in one direction or the other will create a totally different shot and produce great lifelong photo's.

Nikon D3000

If you are a little more advanced and looking for more than just a point and shoot camera, you can get some really nice digital SLR's for under 0. I love the Nikon D90 and use it a lot. I got mine slightly used for 0.

Digital Cameras - What Fun

Some of the advantages of the SLR are the interchangeable lens and controlling the depth of field. There are many many more advantages but I will save those for another article or author.

Depth of field... what you see behind your subject... the less the number the less that will be in focus. The higher the number the more in focus. The f-stop which controls the depth of field also controls how much light will be in the photo. the lower the number the more light and the higher number the less light. this will also effect at what speed the camera will shoot.

Don't buy a nice camera and put it on AUTO and not get to know how you can effect the photo by playing with a few settings. Play with the f-stop, the speed, the ISO settings and the WB (if your camera has this). You can really change a picture dramatically by just playing around a bit. It will be a teaching experience and bring lots of fun.

Sometimes the clouds behind your subject are good and sometimes there bad so shoot from different angles and have fun.

The real fun part is sharing the end result. Have fun and don't be afraid or in too big of a hurry to experiment.

Help Choosing the Right SLR Digital Camera

With more people getting interested in photography, there is an increase in demand for SLR digital cameras. More people want to buy SLR digital cameras but finding the right one may be a hard part. The cameras have different settings that may affect the result of the pictures. However, these setting may even make finding the right camera even harder. But getting confused on the type of camera to be bought may be avoided if you know what you want and you understand what you really need.

There are many things that must be considered in a buying a camera. One of the main considerations is the megapixel. The camera's resolution is also known as the megapixel. This means that when the camera has more pixels, the clearer and sharper the image will be. Thus, you may want to have a camera that has the greater pixel but this may be difficult since those cameras may be too expensive for you. Thus you may need to find a camera that has good pixels but it will also not hurt your budget too much. Having too high pixel count may also lead to unbeautiful images especially when the result is over pixilated.

Nikon D3000

Also SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses. The lens that one uses may depend on the type of image that he wants to achieve. Be it a portrait, macro or a standard lens, it should be used when the situation asks for the lens type.

Help Choosing the Right SLR Digital Camera

If a person really aims to make his pictures better then the right thing to do would be to understand the functions of the camera and the lens type. When you already know how to use and make the best out of these gadgets, then you will have better pictures than a normal compact camera.

However, having a compact camera may still be useful especially during spur of the moment occasions where setting up a SLR digital camera may be inappropriate. Point and shoot cameras may still be useful if you want to take pictures of an occasion that may not need much pixels or changing the settings of the picture may not be needed.

Once you are already familiarized with the different cameras available, it is now the right time to buy the camera. Checking the Internet about the reviews of the camera that you like would give you an idea on how the camera worked for other people. This is also a good way for you to know if the camera would really be a good choice or not.

Being informed about the features of the camera and other important considerations would help you choose which camera to buy. It is important that you checked it out first before buying so that you will really have the one good investment. Also, when you are already in the store and you actually hold the camera, you can try to reach out for the buttons. This is also important so that you can try if you can easily manage to take pictures with this type of camera. When all things are set, enjoy having your camera and take lots of pictures.

Digital Camera Ratings - Kodak EasyShare V803

When doing a digital camera rating it is becoming more and more common to have to rate the camera as a fashion accessory as well as a photographic device. Such is the case with the Kodak EasyShare V803 which comes in eight bright colors including Pink Bliss, Red Shimmer, Cosmic Blue, Mystic Purple, Golden Dream, White Glaze, Silver Essence and Midnight Black and provides you with standard features for point and shoot at a price tag in the 0 range. Beyond the basic features, the V803 has an amazing sensitivity range rising to 1600 ISO and will track and store frequently used settings. The camera is petite so it's transported easily, although it isn't the slimmest camera around. One other problem is the uncovered port which renders the camera vulnerable to lint and debris.

When defining the digital camera ratings for color performance, the EasyShare V803 falls well below the rest of the 2007 models. Faces will tend to appear greenish and skies will be an unnatural shade of blue. Only in the reds and purples are the colors fairly accurate. The EasyShareV803 performed within acceptable range for resolution, but was poor in the test for noise level, both at manual setting and auto settings. The V803 performed very poorly on the white balance settings, both on the auto setting and even more dismally on the presets. This results in a bluish cast to most pictures which is fine if you want to look like you take all pictures underwater. Color accuracy improves slightly as lights are dimmed.

Nikon D3000

The Kodak EasyShare V803 Digital Camera ratings for low light video conditions are dismal. At 30 lux, which is approximately the level of a low illumination night club, or a bowling alley, you would not be able to get recognizable pictures.

Digital Camera Ratings - Kodak EasyShare V803

The components of the EasyShare don't measure up very well in digital camera ratings either. There is no viewfinder which is a growing trend amongst this type of camera. The display screen is used as a preview option. The flash attachment is totally ineffective both in range and in brightness. The zoom lens has some nice features, such as the ability to capture group shots, but the mechanical part of the zoom is so loud it is audible in video shots. The V803 does not feature image stabilization which is a nice touch in the 3x zooms.

Tips For Easy and Enchanting Digital Newborn Photos

It is only natural to want to capture the special qualities of your newborn in pictures. And many parents are quite meticulous in using their digital cameras and camcorders, snapping photos of each and every event - no matter how minor. Yet many of these pictures do not end up looking very memorable in the end. After all, most parents are not trained photographers; therefore, they do not know the best ways to take digital newborn photos.

So, here are some great tips that can help you to make your photos really charming and high-quality. Of course, just about any photo of your beautiful newborn baby will be lovely simply because it stars your newborn. But these tips will help you to take photos that are enchanting, high-quality, and quite impressive.

Nikon D3000

Pose your baby. Newborns do not pose at all. Instead of maneuvering around the baby, trying to find an angle from which to take a photo, pose the baby. Do this gently, of course. But try poses that will look delightful from above or from the side.

Tips For Easy and Enchanting Digital Newborn Photos

Consider the background. Do not be so focused on how adorable the baby looks that you ignore the background of the photo - the wrong background could spoil an otherwise wonderful shot. For instance, if your newborn is still in the hospital and you want a photo of her sleeping, try draping some fabric around her to hide the not-so-cute hospital bassinet. Solid backgrounds are typically best, as they show off your newborn's features.

Think about the entire baby. Some of the most enchanting newborn photographs are those that simply capture one part of the baby. Consider taking photos of only the baby's feet or hands, for example, or maybe a close-up of her profile. But also, as you think about the entire baby, make sure that any full-body shots do include the full body - in other words, do not chop off the edge of a foot in a picture.

Take a lot of photos. It may sound obvious, but this tip doesn't just refer to taking many different photos. Rather, this tip is to remind parents to take several shots of the same image. For example, pose your newborn into an endearing position; then take many photos of that pose from quite a few different angles. In doing this, you will be much more likely to end up with more high-quality shots.

Don't always seek out a happy baby. Some of the most interesting photos of your newborn baby just might be the ones you take when he is fussy or upset. This isn't to say that you should ignore your crying baby just to take a few pictures, of course; instead, enlist your spouse or a friend to assist with taking care of your newborn while you snap some pictures.

Use natural light or diffused light. Your baby may get fussy if you use your camera's flash. Natural or diffused light will keep your newborn calm and will show off your baby's cuteness very well in photos.

Why Not Buy A Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera?

Will a better camera ensure that you take better pictures? The short answer is of course "yes". The slightly longer answer is of course equally obvious "it depends". I like the long answer myself, as the inevitable follow up debate is far more interesting. Perhaps though what you should be asking is, "Will buying a Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera ensure I take better pictures?". Of course you already know "it depends" is the answer. But, exactly what does it depend on?

I depends on several things. First of all, what's your photographic history? If all you've ever taken pictures with are simple point and shoot cameras, then you better be committed to learning. The EOS 40D has a myriad array of features and quirks you'll need to understand. The most obvious one being that you can't frame your photos with the LCD. Coming from a point and shoot world, most users would think there's something wrong with the camera. In reality, that's just the way SLR cameras are designed. It basically means you need to use the viewfinder, which shows you the truest representation of your image before you press the shutter button.

Nikon D3000

If that's a problem for you, then stick with the point and shoots, or keep your eyes open for the next few months as Canon and other manufacturers start to roll out SLR cameras with something called "Live View".

Why Not Buy A Canon EOS 40D Digital SLR Camera?

Another reason to stay away from buying a Canon EOS 40D, is something those of us that own boats like to call 2 footitis. It's simply a condition where it doesn't matter what you have or how good something you own is... you always want something bigger and better. Buying the latest and greatest camera can be both a slippery and expensive slope. I've heard from one EOS 40D owner, who really grew to hate his 40D simply because it couldn't compare with the color reproduction of another SLR camera that cost almost 0 more. Not to hard to guess what he did. He got a new camera, and eBay got another listing for a barely used Canon EOS 40D.

Choose a Nikon D5000 For Great Digital Photos

No longer must amateur photographers choose between the convenience of a digital camera and the quality of a thirty five millimeter SLR camera. Choose a Nikon D500 and you can have the convenience of both.

For the price, this is a great quality digital camera which offers the best of both worlds. It is capable of taking four frames per second and gives 12. 3 megapixel photographs. In addition, the camera can be used in video mode to record short video clips.

Nikon D3000

Nikon has built nineteen different auto-exposure modes into this powerful but compact digital camera. This allows you to shoot pictures in all sorts of lighting conditions from full sun to candle light.

Choose a Nikon D5000 For Great Digital Photos

The camera also has an optional GPS capability and can label each shot with longitude and latitude. It also can recover the time by satellite so that you record all the information about a photograph when it is taken.

The camera offers editing of the digital shots on the camera screen. If there are shots that cannot be edited, then they can be disposed in order to free up the memory for even more new shots each day.

The rechargeable battery that comes with this camera will allow you to take over five hundred shots without having to recharge. This makes it perfect for family vacations and other special events. You will be able to take all the shots needed for the day so that you are able to dispose of those that are less than perfect.

You photos are stored on either SD or SDHC memory cards. The SDHC cards offer even more memory than the SD cards.

As other 35 mm cameras, this one allows you to interchange the lenses and you will find all three major lens companies make compatible lenses for Nikon DSLR cameras. The built in flash is perfect for all those low light conditions. There are also settings for all light levels in between.

If you want to review your shots, you will be able to do so with either a slide show or using thumbnail views. This gives even easier access to any shot you wish to view. It is a great way to choose which shots you want to print or download.

Perhaps the best news about this digital SLR camera is the price. Nikon offers this camera at about six hundred and fifty dollars. This is only slightly more than you would pay for a higher end entry level SLR in a film camera and not that much more than an entry level digital camera.

Which Digital Camera Should I Buy Today?

Can you name the best 3 digital cameras to buy for under 0? How about the worst? It can be pretty intimidating for those unfamiliar with digital camera technology to really know if their getting value for their dollar, or just getting ripped off. How do you distinguish the flood of technical specifications between important features, and marketing hype? Knowing what to look for and what to ignore can help ease your buying decision. And save you money.

First things first. Let me just say, that megapixels (MP) don't mean a damn thing anymore. I know, I know. The biggest print on the digital camera ads and packaging next to the manufacturers name is the number of megapixels the camera can store. The first thing some salesman is going to tell you about, is the number of megapixels. Just ignore them. Five or six years ago, when the majority of cameras had below 4MP, it was a significant item to consider when deciding which digital camera to buy. Today, it's practically impossible to buy a new digital camera with less than 6MP. The manufacturers (all of them) still continue to flaunt megapixels, like it's the holy grail of digital imaging. It's really a disservice to the consumer and they know it.

Nikon D3000

In fact, cramming too many megapixels into a camera with too small an image sensor can seriously degrade your image. You end up with too much noise in your pictures. In addition, more megapixels means you need bigger memory cards, and more room on your computer to store your pictures. That's just an added expense for you the consumer. Image sensor size (CCD) would be a better specification to judge your buying decision on, but your going to have to dig through the fine print to find that.

Which Digital Camera Should I Buy Today?

Bigger LCD's are a big sales point these days with manufacturers and sales staff alike. In this case size is nice, but there are other things to consider as well. LCD resolution is important to consider as well. It allows you to view the LCD from off center, and ensures that likelihood that you'll be able to view your screen in bright sunlight. Unless your budget is under 0, I wouldn't settle for a LCD resolution less than 230,000 pixels. If you do buy a digital camera with a large LCD (3 inch or more), be sure the camera has an old fashion optical viewfinder as well. That's the little square glass piece you can look into to frame your picture when your batteries have been sucked nearly dry by your big LCD screen. It's a nice option to have.

The Histogram in Your Digital Camera Explained in Plain English

I admit I am a bit of a camera nerd however I cannot stress the importance of the learning how to interpret the histogram on your digital SLR camera.

First of all, what is a histogram? This is the time to look in your camera manual and find out which controls you need to use to see it in action. Once you do this you should be able to see it after each exposure you take. Basically it is a graph that showing the distribution of the images brightness level and the brightness level of each primary color - red, green and blue.

Nikon D3000

Let's talk about the two different types of histograms:

The Histogram in Your Digital Camera Explained in Plain English

1) Brightness display shows the exposure level distribution, overall brightness and gradation.
The horizontal axis indicates the brightness level (darker on the left and brighter on the right) while the vertical axis indicates how many pixels exist for each brightness level. The horizontal axis represents 256 shades of gray from pure black (0) on the left to pure white (256) on the right. So the darker the image the more spikes you will have on the left and the brighter the image the more spikes you will have on the right. If the spike is too far to the left you will not have any details in the shadows and if the spikes are too far to the right you may not have detail in the highlights. This is called clipping and when you lose detail, you lose pixels which cannot sometimes be recovered. This is why I check the histogram, at least the first couple images, to see if I need to adjust my exposure.

2) RGB display shows color saturation of red, green and blue and gradation.
The horizontal and vertical axis work the same way but relate to the density of the colors. So for example, the more pixels there are to the left, the darker and less prominent the color will be and the more pixels to the right the brighter and denser the color. If the histogram shows alot of spikes on the left the respective color information could be lacking detail. If there are alot of spikes on the right, the color information could be too saturated and lacking detail.

Don't worry if you don't understand yet. Here is the plain English

Your digital camera can only capture 256 shades of gray from pure black to pure white. Mid-gray (and all middle tones) are in the middle. Remember black is to the left and has a value of 0 and white is to the right and has a value of 256. Mid grays have a value of 128 or so.

You should only be concerned with the right and left sides for these are the areas we have control over. I rarely check the RGB histogram as I am mainly concerned about over-exposing or under-exposing an image.

So you should be checking the brightness level histogram for clipping on the right of left side. What is clipping? Great question. Clipping is when the spike extends beyond the horizontal axis on the left or right sides. If it extends beyond the left side you are under-exposing your image and will lose detail in the shadows. If it extends beyond the right side you will lost detail in the highlights. If you lose detail you have lost pixels that cannot be recovered. (you can shoot in raw and recover some lost pixels, but that's another article).

So what do you do if you notice the clipping. You want to make sure your subject is exposed properly. If you lose detail in the background (maybe it doesn't have any detail) you are okay. However if lose detail (pixels) in your subject you will need to make an adjustment with your exposure and open up an f-stop for a spike off the left side and close down an f-stop for a spike to the right. Here is an example:

You are shooting in AV mode and your aperture is set to f/8. You notice a spike off the left side, you would reset your aperture to f/5.6 to open up one stop. Re-shoot the image and check your histogram and readjust if necessary. If you notice the spike to the right you would reset your aperture to f/11.

I hope that all makes sense. You can experiment with different backgrounds and learn how to read your histogram on your own digital SLR camera.

How to Take Better Pictures Indoors - 5 Digital Photography Tips

Digital cameras are getting more intelligent with each new release. This should mean that we can get great photos all the time. But it ain't necessarily so. Just because the camera has intelligence built into it, that does not give us an excuse to not use ours (intelligence, that is). If you want to learn how to take good pictures indoors, you will need to study and practice.

First: Read the camera manual. It is possible to take pictures just by pressing the shutter button. The camera technology will generally produce a photo that is acceptable, quite unlike the days of film when you could get those black prints back from the lab and wonder what it was you were trying to photograph. However, if you read the manual, you will not just get acceptable photos, you will get great photos.

Nikon D3000

Second: Use a tripod. Low light means that the shutter must stay open longer to let in enough light to properly expose the image. The longer the shutter remains open, the more chance there is for movement, resulting in blurry photos. Using a tripod will keep your camera steady for those long exposures. You can even consider using the timer so you can be part of the photo.

How to Take Better Pictures Indoors - 5 Digital Photography Tips

Third: Raise the ISO sensitivity value. A normal ISO value is 100. You can raise that value in order to let in order to increase the shutter speed, thus having less chance of images blurring.

Fourth: Adjust the White Balance. Have you ever noticed that indoor photos do not look as "normal" like outdoor photos? That is because the lighting is different. Most cameras are left on Auto White Balance. Some of them do a better job of getting the color correct, but if you, the photographer, set the white balance, you take the guesswork out of the process. You can set the white balance to tungsten (incandescent) or florescent to get a more pleasing color output.

Fifth: Set the Scene Mode. Many newer digital cameras have numerous scene modes. If you are in a unique lighting situation, there may be a scene mode for it. For instance, the Panasonic ZS3 has scene mode settings for "party" and "candle light" among others. Using these will get much more agreeable color output.

I don't know if you realized it as you read, but numbers 3, 4, and 5 will require you to Read the Manual (the First tip)!

Top 3 Digital SLR Cameras For 2010

Digital SLR cameras are all the rage these days, as more and more people take an interest in photography and decide to break away from the limited point-and-shoot cameras in favor of more complex cameras. Today's DSLR have evolved into full-featured, yet easy-to-use machines that enable even amateur photographers to deliver professional-quality results.

The main advantage of owning a DSLR is that you can simply switch to manual mode and have full control of your camera. They also tend to produce better pictures even when in automatic mode, they are faster and more reliable than point-and-shoots and allow you to change lenses anytime you want.

Nikon D3000

SLR cameras are for serious amateurs, photography enthusiasts and professionals. They usually come with not only full support for manual shooting mode, but also flash sync, RAW format support and a host of other useful features.

Top 3 Digital SLR Cameras For 2010

There is not one camera that can be considered the best SLR. There are however, certain brands that you should seriously consider when shopping for a reflex: Nikon, Canon and, as of late, Sony as well. Below are three of the best slr cameras currently available:

Nikon D40: Small, Light and Great For Beginners
If you are eager to learn more about photography, but have never truly used anything except for a normal point-and-shoot camera, then the Nikon D40 is great camera for you. This little camera comes packed with powerful features just like those available on professional cameras, but in a way that's much more user-friendly, even for newbies.

Nikon D3000: A Sturdy and Reliable DSLR With Tons Of Features
Anyone interested in getting serious with photography should seriously consider buying a Nikon D3000. It's a powerful DSLR with advanced features and superb image quality. One of the many benefits of this camera is it's incredible performance on tricky low light situations. It makes clear, noise-free images unlike any other.

Sony A200K: An Alternative To Traditional Brands
Another camera you should consider when upgrading from a regular point-and-shoot camera to a more powerful digital SLR is the Sony A200K. It provides a wide range of features and fine image quality at reasonable prices. If there's one issue with getting a Sony camera -- in contrast to one from Canon or Nikon -- is the lack of choices for additional lenses.

When choosing the best SLR for you, keep in mind that different people have different needs and expectations. What worked for someone else may not necessarily work for you, and this is why research is so important. You should make a list of the features you want and than search for the models that have what you are looking for. Than it's a matter of comparing extras and price. That is the best way to make an informed decision.

Tips To Quickly Learn How To Use Any Digital SLR Camera

Those Canon commercials on the radio touting how easy it is to get shots like the professionals, if you buy a Rebel XTi have been effective, face it.So you've gone out and bought a digital single lens reflex camera. Now read the owner's manual from front to back. But really who wants to do that? Follow these tips if you're feeling overwhelmed by the thick manual. Here's what you should know to just "operate the camera." I say "operate" because you're not in total control and you are letting the camera do its thing for you.
Set the camera on auto. If there is full auto, do so. The idea here is to take some pictures to give you something to work with. Download the images to your computer. There are usually 2 options for this although a 3rd one now exist which is quite spiffy but may not be for everyone. First option requires you to install driver software on your computer and connect your camera via a cable (usually USB 2.0) The 2nd option using an external card reader is the one I recommend because it doesn't drain your camera's battery and your camera doesn't need to be tethered to your computer. This allows you to continue shooting if you have another memory card. Why wait around? Life is too short and those memory cards are so cheap now. Your 3rd option, if your camera uses the "sd" or secure digital type, involves buying a Wi-Fi enabled memory card. This special sd cards can transfer your images wirelessly to your computer through your WiFi network to your computer and then upload it to the numerous photo-sharing websites. Format the memory card. When the card is full and after you've downloaded those images to your computer, this setting erases the images on the card and frees it up to be re-used again and again. Once you've mastered steps 1,2 & 3, you're ready to be dangerous and proceed with reckless abundance. Jump around your owner's manual to figure out how to change these settings next ISO. ISO refers to the sensitivity of the ccd or charged couple device. If you were a film shooter, this is like having the ability to change film speed in mid-roll.You might find yourself in poor light, so this is a must. Shutter Speed and Aperture. Select aperture priority and set the lens aperture to f 5.6 .So long as you don't get some sort of protest from your camera, you should be fine. If the shutter speed drops below something you can't hand hold, some cameras will beep or kick in the built-in flash (assuming you have one on the top of the camera) If you're shooting a moving subject, choose shutter priority and see if you can take a picture at 1/500 second. Again, if there is insufficient light, there's usually some indication. The focus point in my camera changes color from green to yellow as an indicator. Yours may have something similar. White Balance. The default on the camera is automatic white balance. That works for 95% of the time. Since you've invested the money in a fancier camera, why not see what you've paid for? If you don't try changing the white balance manually, you will never know. Generally there is daylight, overcast, florescent, incandescent, auto and custom. The surest way to know is to test by taking the same subject under all the different lighting conditions and then open up the image on your computer. That little lcd (liquid crystal display) monitor on the camera is not a good gauge. Compression. This is the setting or what is known as "quality" that the camera will record your images. Used to be more of an issue when memory cards were expensive. These days everyone has a drawer full of these cards because most folks never download their images like in the film days, they never developed that roll of film until they absolutely have to.The only difference is memory cards supposedly can store your images indefinitely without any degradation.Film because of its chemical nature deteriorates. Auto focus sensor. By default most cameras have this "red" cursor centered. You want to be able to change this unless you want your subject to always be in the center.
So there you have it. Other features like auto bracketing and burst rate or continuous or predictive focusing are secondary. Those settings will be useful after you've mastered Tips 1 through 8.

Basic Digital Photography - Taking Action Shots

Personal photography has gone through a sort of mini evolution in the past 20 years as digital cameras have become popular. With the ability to take huge numbers of pictures, save them on computer, and share them over the internet, the cost of film and developing are no longer limiting factors. Although group photographs, portraits, celebrations, and vacations are still common images, personal photography now captures more impromptu and daily types of events. Photographs of fast moving action are more common as well as people are able to experiment to obtain the type of images they want without fear of "ruining" a shot that requires more skill to take. Capturing action can be challenging for a beginning photographer and requires quite a bit of practice to master. The following outlines a few pointers that can get the novice started off on the right foot.

1. When trying to obtain shots of action, the photographer can use one of two approaches:

Nikon D3000

- Follow subjects with the camera as they wait for action to happen.

Basic Digital Photography - Taking Action Shots

- Focus the camera on a particular spot where action is anticipated and wait for it to happen. An example would be focusing on the basketball goal or 1st base. When using this method it is often best to observe through the Optical Viewfinder and keep both eyes open so that it is easy to anticipate shots as action approaches.

2. Reduce lag time and latency:

- Shutter lag is the delay between the time the shutter button is pressed and the time when the camera actually takes the picture. During this lag time the camera is setting the exposure and focus. Shutter lag is particularly problematic when trying to capture action shots. One way of decreasing shutter lag is to press the shutter button halfway down, hold it, and then press the button down completely when ready to take the shot. This process allows the camera to perform some of the focusing function prior to taking the shot thereby reducing the shutter lag time.

- Latency is the time it takes the digital camera to write/store images before the next shot can be taken. To reduce latency, a photographer should use flash cards with fast write times. In some instances, a lower resolution setting can be used for the shot so that the camera has less information to process and store, but this technique of reducing latency must be used carefully as image quality can be compromised.

3. Follow the action; this is known as "panning". Panning involves tracking the motion of the subject horizontally to capture the movement as it goes side to side. As the photographer moves in the same direction as the motion, a slow shutter speed is often used to allow the subject to be focused and the background to blur demonstrating the action that is occurring. Panning is not necessary for all action shots but is one method of demonstrating the movement while keeping the subject in focus. The process of panning involves the following:

- Tracking is initiated prior to taking the shot.

- The shot is taken by squeezing the shutter button to avoid any downward movement of the camera.

- Tracking of the movement continues for 1-2 seconds after the shot is taken.

4. Use Burst Mode when wanting to capture a series of movements. Many digital cameras offer a Burst Mode which allows the user to capture a sequence of shots. The camera tends to set the focus and exposure on the first shot and then take remaining shots with these same settings. This allows the camera to take the shots in a more rapid sequence.

5. Action shots can be taken from any angle. However, staying parallel to the action generally produces the best demonstration of movement and allows the photographer to pan if desired.

6. Shutter speed reminder. A faster shutter speed generally freezes action to help eliminate blurring, however a somewhat slower shutter speed can better demonstrate movement by allowing some blurring of the arms, legs, and feet as the subject moves. The type of shot desired is what dictates the appropriate shutter speed to use.

7. Practice, practice, practice. Beginners can anticipate their action shots will not meet their expectations initially. Practice is necessary and will require many shots to be taken. However, with the ability to delete images on digital cameras, practice is only an investment in time.

Discover the Difference Between Modern Digital Cameras

Digital cameras fall into several categories based on functionality and quality, here are few common terms:

DIGITAL COMPACT

Nikon D3000

Also referred to as 'point and shoot', these cameras are the least expensive and are under £100. They can come with more functionality with a rise in price to circa £400. Compacts are quite small and portable (the smaller ones are the shape and size of a deck of playing cards), and are designed for 'snapshots'. They should have zoom lenses and built in flashes. Because these cameras are not very dynamic they mostly function on automatic settings to allow picture taking without understanding the depth and complexity of photography.

DIGITAL SLR CAMERA

The term Digital SLR is an acronym for digital single lens reflex. These are larger in build and offer additional manual functionality, e.g. isolating the shutter speed or aperture settings for greater control. True SLR cameras have interchangeable lenses which are required for different photography subjects.

Amateur SLR's

Usually supplied as a kit, it would include the camera body and a selection of commonly used zoom lenses, and sometimes other useful gadgets depending on the manufacturer. Prices range from £450-£900. These are great for learning the basics by giving the amateur photographer a dynamic range of auto and manual functions to progress and build confidence.

Professional SLR's

Professional cameras are expensive because they are on the cutting edge of technology. The term 'professional digital SLR' refers to the camera body only and not lenses or kits. Prices for camera bodies can range for £2000-£10000 (and beyond) depending on the professional field of the photographer and camera manufacturer.

LENSES

Zoom lenses are measured in millimetres and have an aperture setting alongside such as f2.8 or f4.0-f5.6. Lenses with small aperture numbers are known as fast lenses. Commonly used zooms are 24-70, 70-200, and 100-300. These lenses are very useful because the zoom allows your image to be framed and composed standing on the spot without having to move closer or further from the subject. Compare these to Prime lenses which have a fixed focal length. However the zoom functionality is known to have a degrading effect on image quality which is why prime lenses are the preferred choice for photographers who do not require zoom functionality. General zoom lenses range from £400 for basic 'glass' and up to £1400 for quality 'glass'. The difference in quality is clear. Lenses used for professional sports photography or wildlife can be as much as £8000 and beyond!

If you are an amateur photographer who plans to bring your photography skills to the next level, the Canon Digital Rebel XSi will be the prefer DSLR camera for you. Lets take a closer look at this very popular DSLR camera and what it has got to offer.

Cons: After taking a closer look at its price, feature and performance ration, our tech experts have trouble finding any significant flaws on the Canon Digital Rebel XSi. Nevertheless we managed to find some minor ones.

Nikon D3000

For instance, this model has no video features. Although the battery life span is generally good, it drains quite quickly when the Live View feature is being used. Considering that this is a DSLR model, it comes with a basic set of features. So if you are looking for a camera with tones of bells and whistles, this model is not for you. The design of the camera is also a little too subtle (but comfortable to use nevertheless).

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi 12.2 MP Digital SLR Camera Review - Pros and Cons

Pros: Like many Canon cameras, what the Canon Digital Rebel XSi lacks in features is made up in terms of quality and performance. The photo quality was so impressive that it rivals some of the more expensive DSLR models in the market. The photos were sharp with accurate colors and good noise profile. The quality of the photos was very good even at ISO 1600.

Despite is timid design, the Canon Digital Rebel XSi is very comfortable to use. It is also very light, weighing in at just 16.8 ounces. Speed wise, this model also fare well with a fast startup time (0.2 seconds) and shot-to-shot time (0.4 seconds). Overall, I am on the same page with other DSLR experts out there in declaring that the Canon Digital Rebel XSi is arguably the best entry-level DSLR camera in the market.
