Is the Rebel T1i the Smarter Choice?

If your someone who is interested in technical numbers, than you had to see, that the Canon SLR Rebel T1i has a 15.1MP image sensor, and the more expensive Nikon D90 has a 12.3mega-pixel image sensor. If those specifications were all you needed, then it would look reasonably obvious that the Rebel T1i SLR, is the optimum digital camera for the money today.

By only considering the numbers, you don't understand the big picture here. Bigger is frequently not better.

Megapixels is often a big part of selling digital cameras, and Fuji, Nikon and the rest of the producers know that all too well. As for the Rebel SLR T1i, the merchandising department seems to have trumped the design team.

Is the Rebel T1i the Smarter Choice?

The APS-C image sensor employed in the T1i SLR, is a hair tinier than the DX image sensor used by the Nikon D90. Obviously there are a few approaches to squeeze extra pixels into a smaller sensor. Using tinier pixels, and wadding them closer together works. A more precise indicator of photo quality than megapixels, is pixel density. In this case, the D90 SLR comes in with much better numbers (lower is better here) of 3.3 vs 4.5 for the Canon Rebel T1i.

There are different concerns to think about, when dealing with a digital SLR that has high pixel density. As you go in search of extra lenses, you'll quickly learn, that more megapixels means more money on expensive lenses. The lenses designed to be used with high megapixel digital camera are designed to resolve better, and virtually always cost you.

For some reason, the lens that's normally supplied (EF-S IS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6) by Canon with the T1i, is not one of those that is well suited at managing higher megapixel counts. Canon does indeed make lens that would make a better match for the Canon Rebel T1i, including the EF-S 18-200mm Canon .

If that alone wasn't bad enough, you should be made aware, that high pixels can be a detriment to dynamic range, ISO, and diffraction as well. Upon further scrutiny, it would seem that our initial impression of the Canon Rebel T1i being better bang for the buck was slightly misguided.

An camera industry bench mark used to measure RAW sensor information is the DxOMark test. Testing between the Canon 50D SLR (same image sensor used by the Rebel SLR T1i) versus the Nikon D90, show the D90 Digital SLR to be much more capable. I have no doubt, that T1i DxOMark testing wll be almost identical to that of the current EOS 50D test data currently available.
